What to Do in Case of a Motorcycle Crash
While a motorcycle crash is something every rider should do what they can to avoid, it’s still important to be able to react appropriately should the worst happen. Your behavior directly before, during, and after the crash can do a lot to minimize your risk of suffering an injury. That’s why Honda of North Carolina has created this list of motorcycle crash safety tips.
Before the Motorcycle Crash
How you act in the few seconds between realizing that you are going to crash and the actual event can make a huge difference. Use your brakes to slow down as much as possible while scanning the area ahead for obstacles. Aim for the softest spot you can find in order to minimize injury to you and damage to your bike.
During the Motorcycle Crash
It may be tempting to let your instincts take over during the crash. However, many of these instincts can actually increase your risk of injury. For example, while tensing up during the event may be the natural response, you will be more likely to avoid injury if your body is relaxed and limp at the time of impact. Instinct will also tell you to reach out your arms and brace for impact, but tucking in your appendages instead can help you avoid sprained or broken bones. Remember to let go of your motorcycle so that you do not end up under it.
After the Motorcycle Crash
After the crash, count to five and be sure that you have stopped before getting up. If you are in the middle of the road, move to the side so that you are out of harm’s way. Take a moment to inspect yourself for injuries. Adrenaline can mask pain, so be very thorough in order to find any injuries that might not be immediately obvious. From there you can take steps such as exchanging insurance information, calling a tow truck, or getting yourself medical attention.
