Tips to Maintain Your Outboard Motor

Plan Your Routine

Keeping track of all the various tasks necessary to keep your outboard motor maintained can be a challenge. Having a set maintenance schedule will make it that much easier to keep track of everything. If you’re not sure how to set up a maintenance schedule, consult your owner’s manual. 

Inspecting your Outboard Motor

A key part of maintaining any machine is regular inspections. Remove the cowling from your outboard engine to get a better look at the inside.Take the time to check the oil and spark plugs while you’re at it. If the oil appears sludgy or is gritty to the touch, have a mechanic take a look at the engine. Finally, don’t forget to check on the fuel line and make sure that it is still fully intact and fastened securely. 

Post-Boating Maintenance

Take a little time after each boating trip to maintain your outboard motor. Start by rinsing and flushing your outboard motor in order to discourage corrosion. Just don’t forget to put your engine in neutral before you start pumping! It’s also a good idea to unhook your fuel line and allow your motor to use up any excess fuel. Once you’re sure that your engine has fully dried, shut it down flip the battery switch.
